Our life has become so hectic and fast paced that our society finds itself in the middle of a health phenomena with serious implications.
In fact, in spite of a society living in a certain level of opulence, the food we eat is such that we are facing an obesity problems associated by some to an actual epidemics.
Not only are we not eating well, but we are also leading a life in which we do not exercise sufficiently and in doing so add an extra element into our existing problems caused by our poor eating habits.
The consequence is simply that all over the world, people are putting on weight. Roll forward a number of years and these folks now fact a life punctuated by serious and life threatening weight related issues. Arthritis, heart problems and diabetes are some example of these problems.
In other words, obesity and excess weight is a killer notwithstanding the fact that it also puts a severe strain on our recourses. Think about weight related health care issues and the dramatic effects on business; employee absenteeism can have, particularly when such absenteeism is directly related to weight problems.
This is taking place in spite of the very observant eye of a media who has taken the battle against the buldge to heart. Everyone you look, chances are you will be confronted with a statement, broadcast, lecture attesting to the problems of being overweight and what we should do in order to fight it.
For some, the answer to that question is simple. When it comes to weight loss, the only requirement is eat less and exercise more.
This statement is of course accurate, but it doesn't take into account the many circumstance which have caused us to gain weight in the first place such as our previous poor eating habits which over the course of some years have caused our body to be in a state of chaos.
And so, in the past decades fad diets have come and gone often to the detriment of an inspecting population who tried them in order to lose weight. For them, not only did the not lose weight, but all too often, these diets succeeded in making their previous unhealthy situation even worse.
The consensus today is that we should all stay well clear of such diets and so something "good" has a least come out of this situation.
Now, if we are to stay away from the quick weight loss programs, what else can we do? For starters, we need to remind ourselves that we did not gain weight overnight and just as it took time for the excess weight to pile up, it will also take time for us to lose it all.
Losing weight is process in need of dedication and time. It also requires a change of life style to start with the type of food we choose as nutrition.
Let's face it: for most of us, junk food forms an intrinsic part of our daily eating pattern and we need to recognize that it may be the one thing that is the most easily addressable in terms of changes. Let's commit to eat less of eat and replace it with food that is actually good for us.
What has always amazed me is that for the majority of folks, replacing junk food with a nutritional alternative is actually a process then can achieve easily, and over a relatively short period of time. With little effort and dedication soon the need to eat junk food will have been forgotten.
Part of the life style changes needed in order to lose weight is to recognize that we need to exercise more.
Here, reason and caution are paramount especially if you have not exercised in a long time. Do not fall into the trap of setting for yourself an exercise program that you will not be able to follow over time.
The object is for life changes to occur in small steps so rather than enroll yourself into high level aerobic classes every day, a better option might be to start your new exercising life with a more reasonable approach such as a 10 minute walk 3 times a week for example. Add more intensity as your body sees fit, and not as you see fit, if you know what I mean.
