The Seductive Power of Brand Name Watches

We live in the digital age where we can purchase almost anything online, from our groceries to home furniture to clothing and accessories. The world is just I never much cared for the finer things in life. I eat bologna, drink Miller High Life and watch reality shows about people that work "real" jobs. You know the types, coal miners or ice road truckers or people who make decorative cakes. Blue collar stuff. I'm not saying I am a reverse elitist, but I once connected the cuffs on a dress shirt with a hot glue gun to avoid using cufflinks. My father worked construction. I work construction. My mom even worked construction for a little while. So when it comes to well aged wines and opera, I'm sorry I can't help you, I don't understand that life. There I was though, I opened up that issue of Gentleman's Quarterly Magazine (something I'm usually too busy watching baseball to do) and saw the most beautifully crafted, elegant looking watch these big blue collar eyes have ever seen.
High quality watches, yeah, I thought I'd seen my share, but this was different. I felt it on every page. My eyes would immediately dart to the wrist of whatever celebrity, politician, model or athlete was being photographed. My attention even bounded past a scantily clad Blake Lively to admire an advertisement for Tag Heuer watches. I did not know what had come over me. It was like years of middle class repression was bursting out in a torrent of brand name watches, my new hobby, my new obsession. I couldn't have imagined when I was eating Cheetos and listening to a continuous loop of the Monday Night Football song that Wittnauer watches would suddenly titillate me so.
I suppose in my youth I might have enjoyed the literature of F. Scott Fitzgerald and when the other children were in the sand box I would practice tying a bow tie. I suppose it all could have been different. But when I hit high school the regular every man vibe I now embody took me over. I listened to Bruce Springsteen on my way to work at the local ice skating rink. When I was polishing those rental skates I was not thinking about Invicta men's watches. I was thinking about girls and episodes of The A-Team.
That has all changed now. I'm a brand name watches junkie. I can't help myself. When I'm near a magazine rack I just have to browse the men's magazines for the latest in watch style. I have to see which of my favorite high quality watches are on whose high paid wrist. I find myself compulsively stopping into strange jewelry stores and brand name watches shops. I don't even know who I am anymore.
