I am sometimes approached or emailed by individuals who ask me whether you can really make money blogging.
My answer is always the same - YES you can!
What most people want to know is
Is it possible to make a living just from blogging?
How many people are doing this?
I have also been asked one more question by many people.
Do you have to be a 'professional' writer to make money blogging?
Occasionally you will see someone claiming to have become a nearly overnight millionaire by blogging. These claims usually come with an announcement of a new service or amazing product (sensational marketing).
You can also find blogs written on how it is not possible to make money blogging. (These usually include accusations of lies and scams and often include a means of making money online in some other way).
The truth is actually in between these two.
Here's what I know about making money blogging.
1. It can be done.
Since I started making money blogging, even though I have only been blogging for over a year, I have seen a gradual and steady increase in the amount of money coming in. I know of others who started part-time and grew their business into full-time income - and more.
2. There is more than one way to make an income blogging.
There are as many ways to make an income blogging as there are blogs. You can be blog about what already interests you and what you are now blogging about. Some possible subjects for blogging include parenting, cooking, crafts, fashion, children's behavior, motorcycles, travel, life coaching, fishing, camping and jewelry - to name just a few.
Many bloggers are using their time to make money blogging as extra income and often increase their income as their blog grows. Some choose to blog full-time - and make a full-time income (and more) doing it.
There are other ways to monetize your blog - producing products or services such as training, speaking engagements, webinars, producing books or DVDs, and advertising through Cost per click, sponsorship and text links.
3. No guaranteed formulas.
Occasionally, someone releases a 'formula' that is supposed to guarantee success if you follow it. The truth is there is no formula.
While many bloggers are making money blogging, they usually have used training, the experience of others and have followed their own instincts to provide for a niche market. Successful bloggers, though doing the same basic thing, have different styles and takes on their subject. It is important to know what other bloggers are doing. Be willing to create your own style and learn from others who are successfully making money blogging.
4. Blogging on any niche topics.
It is simply not true that the only ones making money blogging are writing about making money blogging. There are as many people making money blogging as there are interests that you can think of. Some niches offer more interest in specific information on such things as photography or solar energy. Others are of a more general nature such as parenting. You can have more than one blog on more than one subject. Some blog about recycling or life skills and others about dealing with pre-schoolers.
There are a lot of bloggers who write about the subjects they are interested in. Most do not blog about making money blogging.
5. Most bloggers are not making a full-time income by blogging.
In a recent survey of 1508 bloggers, about 50% of them had been blogging less than two years. Of those, the majority earned less than $3.50 per day.
So most people are not making money blogging. BUT, 4% are seeing an income over $10,000.00 per month and 9% were making over $1000.00 a month (a part-time income).
While the numbers of bloggers making money blogging has increased since the survey, most bloggers are not making a lot of income.
6. It takes time to create. Build steadily.
85% of the bloggers surveyed who made the higher incomes had been making money blogging for more than four years. They build their income gradually, often taking two years or more to make a part-time income and four or more years to make a full-time income. Making money blogging is not a way to get rich overnight. It takes time to gain an audience, create a market and get a reputation so you become known for honesty, building trust.
Of course, there are no guarantees of income at any level.
7. It takes work.
Hanging in there is the key to making money blogging. Those who making money are also 'doers'. They are action people who are willing to do the work. I find blogging enjoyable and rewarding but it takes time and work to get an audience, plan and create products to sell and to create a steady stream of content for your blog.
The most important thing to remember is to make your blogs interesting. Original work that captivates your audience will go a long way. But it still takes time to put together.
In summary, I still say YES, anyone can make money blogging. There are many people who are making money blogging in a wide variety of niches of their own interests. The common denominator for those successful is that they are willing to do the work and stick with it for the time it takes to create the income they are looking for.
If you know my story, I have been blogging for over a year and at first I made many mistakes. I didn't have the training or know-how to be making any money at my blog. But since I have found Level One Network blog training I have been able to make money every single month. The training is amazing and so easy to watch. It is all in video format and we are working at converting it into typed out text as well. The company is fairly new, about 6 months old, but if expanding fast and furious! Joining it now is like getting in on the ground level still! It's amazing all the things they are talking about adding to the training still.
If you already have a blog or are thinking about starting a blog, go check out Level One Network. For just $29, it's so worth it. Even if you pay for the month and just get the training and cancel later! The training is the best on the internet!
